Worldwide Festivals

The BMC in collaboration with Actionwork produced the UK's first festival for the Theatre of the Oppressed. Held in Brixton South London each autumn, this festival brings people together to build a new culture of democratic participation that is rooted in community, cultural organising, and collective care by bringing residents and policymakers together to co-create innovative and effective solutions to complex challenges, promoting equity, creativity, and fun in local and national political spheres. The BMC Theatre of the Oppressed festival invites theatre practitioners from London and other parts of the UK to work with community groups in Brixton, South London and across the UK exploring through ritual, drama, music and theatre oppression/s that people of colour feel when facing racial injustice and other prejudice. Festival participants, as a collective, perform open Theatre of the Oppressed activities within the community over two-days following a series of collective sharing sessions. These live activities include Invisible Theatre, Forum Theatre, Image Theatre and Legislative Theatre and draw on the continued work of the Black Men's Consortium (BMC). The annual BMC Theatre of the Oppressed festival is a showcase of creative black men and collaborators utilising the skills of theatre to make a positive difference to their families, communities and to the country as a whole.
